I think it’s safe to say that hardwood decking is the most attractive product on the market. It’s hard not to love the natural look of wood. Each slat varying in colour and the occasional knot proves for a great aesthetic look.
What’s the catch? Well, the maintenance. Any natural hardwood decking requires yearly maintenance to restore the beautiful colour and protect the wood from the elements. Until the last 10 years, maintenance has been accepted as common knowledge and a part of life with wooden decking however, a fantastic alternative has now arrived onto the market called composite decking. Composite is made from wood fibres and recycled plastic and does not need re oiling which eliminates the majority of the maintenance you get with hardwood.
Treating any hardwood decking requires a bit of elbow grease. Old treatment needs removing off the surface of the wood, any rough areas need sanding, exposing the fresh wood and then a coat of either decking stain or oil applied on a warm day.
So the choice lies with you and whether you have the time to give your hardwood decking the TLC it requires, or go down the composite route of no re oiling.
